ShellAxis demo (version 0.4) - Read Me -------------------------------------- ShellAxis is an image measurement system that calculate the position of the coiling axis in shells of gastropod mollusks (in lateral view only in the current version). It then records measurements relative to this particular reference system. This is a temporary demo. This version is still in development. Databases created with this version may or may not be compatible with the future final version 1.0! It will be integrated in the SciViews software in future versions, but for the moment it runs separately. It is a 32-bits program that runs under Windows 95/98/NT. To install it, you need at least a Pentium 166 Mhz with 32 Mb memory under Windows 95/98 or 48 Mb under Windows NT. RAM memory being the most important factor for speed in this program, 64 to 128 Mb memory is to be preferred. A fast accelerated video card on the PCI, or better on the AGP bus is indispensable. Also a good monitor, preferably a 17'' or more, is a comfortable addition for this image analysis software. Microsoft Excel 97 or 2000 has to be installed on the same computer, with the solver macro (be sure to check it when installing Office, because it is deselected by default in the standard installation of Office 97!). You need approximately 16 Mb free on the disk to install the software. Add an extra free disk space of 0.5-1 Mb for databases and calculation files for each image + the size of the images them- selves (in uncompressed bmp format). Setup is in French (the program is build with the French version of Visual Basic Pro 5.0), but keeping all default options should be fine. In this case, you just have to click the large button with an installation icon in the dialog box of the setup program. The rest of ShellAxis is in plain English. Once installed, a tutorial is available (ShellAxis.rtf). You can completely remove this software with the "add /remove programs" option in the configuration panel. If you added files in the ShellAxis directories (for instance, you practiced the tutorial exercices), the desinstallation program will warn you that it cannot delete all files (for the sake of security your exercices are not deleted). You can remove them manually after desinstallation, after which your system is completelly cleaned. This software is distributed under a Q Public License version 1.0 (see License.txt). You can distribute and use it for free providing you respect the license agreement. Please, give it to friends and colleagues. Suggestions and bug reports, or portions of code are welcome. visit the official web site of ShellAxis for that (http://www.sciviews.org). Note however that source code is not available yet for this demo. You may ask it to the SciViews project coordinator (coordinator@sciviews.org). As we intend to rework the code deeply for the next version, we don't advise you to customize it now.
