Analyze your plankton through digitized images

Last update: 18 June 2007, by Philippe Grosjean

Plankton samples are traditionally collected with plankton nets and analyzed by taxonomists using a stereomicroscope and determination keys. This work is labor-intensive and requires highly-specialized and well-trained people.

With the advances in image analysis and machine learning, it becomes evident that the analysis of digitized plankton images can support, ease and speed-up the work. The free Zoo/PhytoImage software (licensed under GNU/GPL) provides a complete solution for such a job.

Download Zoo/PhytoImage

The installer is the same one for ZooImage and PhytoImage. You don't need to install it twice if you want both applications! You need to install also ImageMagick 16bit (see hereunder). Note also that Zoo/PhytoImage is not available yet for MacOS or Linux/Unix, only for Windows.
  Zoo/PhytoImage 1.2-1 (Windows installer, 136Mb - required)
  ImageMagick 6.1.9 Q16 Windows (Windows installer, 7.5Mb - required)

Get help to use Zoo/PhytoImage

After downloading the sofware, look at the Zoo/PhytoImage user's manual that explains in details how to install the software and how to use it (quick tutorial). Additional example datasets should be used for training before working with your actual data. If you have further, or specific questions, you should use the dedicated forum.
